C14 JOURNAL ISSUE N11
During my working life – which is far longer than I care to remember – I have seen and studied thousands of houses: large and small, beautiful, run down, historical, modern and even futuristic. They have all impressed me on some level, I even wish I had designed some of them myself, while I couldn’t have lived in others even if my life depended on it. Yet all of them, for one reason or another, aroused my curiosity, firstly on a human level and then professionally. A house is a complex system: it acts as a mirror of course, to the person living in it, but it’s a fun-house mirror. It is a combination of reality, wishful-thinking, the desire to show-off and the need to hide away. It’s a refuge but, occasionally, a stage. It’s a space we love, a space we chose because it represents us. To the trained eye it reveals much more about its owner than they would like. This is why we have chosen home as the topic of this issue. Because there is no other place as difficult to design as one’s home. And here at C14 we adore impossible challenges.
